Bekasi wins first-ever Adipura cleanliness award
Formerly dubbed the dirtiest metropolitan city, the West Java municipality of Bekasi has finally won its first-ever Adipura cleanliness award.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to confer the trophy on Mayor Mochtar Mohamad during the national commemoration of World Environment Day at the State Palace on Tuesday.
Mochtar attributed the success to the strong commitment from all elements of society to keep the satellite city clean, and innovations in waste management.
“The city was named the dirtiest metropolitan city between 2005 and 2008, but all our hard work has paid off as we have won the coveted trophy,” Mochtar told Antara state news agency after a weekly ceremony at his office Monday.
He added the efforts did not use much of the regional budget, thanks to the participation of residents, companies operating in the city and government agencies.
The municipality administration promoted a massive tree planting campaign, resettled roadside vendors , improved waste management, normalized rivers and expanded green areas.
“The Adipura award is just a stepping stone. We hope to instill the green, orderly and clean culture in society,” the mayor said.

Bekasi Named Indonesia’s Cleanest City by Government
Once known as one of Indonesia’s dirtiest cities, Bekasi, has reportedly been named the nation’s cleanest city.
Endang Suharyadi, a spokesman for the Bekasi municipality, told the Jakarta Globe on Monday that Mayor Mochtar Mohamad would be presented with the Adipura award by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.
He said that the city — home of the mammoth Bantar Gebang landfill used by Jakarta — had initiated a number of green initiatives in recent years, including a weekly clean-up, greening projects, tree-planting and waste management.
“Every weekend the people coordinated by their neighborhood and community unit heads have been instructed to do a neighborhood clean up and tree planting,” Endang said.
“There are campaigns targeted on each level, from neighborhood unit up to subdistrict level. Each houses are responsible to sort their garbage before finally it reaches the Bantar Gebang dump site.”
The Adipura awards are held every two years by the State Ministry of the Environment.
According to the 2006 Ministerial Decree on Adipura, the awards are determined based on a number of factors, including public facilities, transportation and sanitation facilities.
